Transition To Teaching (TTT)

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q: What kinds of teaching jobs are included in this Program?

A: The primary focus of the Transition to Teaching Program is to bring additional qualified people into the nation’s public primary and secondary schools. These public school programs are also those at which the states’ alternate-route or other post-baccalaureate certification programs are directed. Private schools and colleges/universities require no additional certification, so, while a few exceptions might exist, funds to transition to college teaching are not a part of this Program. The Program is not designed to cover costs for certification in counseling or guidance.

Q: What kinds and how many teaching jobs are available?

A: The availability of both certification programs and teaching positions varies widely from state to state and even within a state by local school district. While AT&T/Alliance will provide interested employees with initial information, it is the employee’s responsibility to research the potential for certification and jobs in the geographic areas of interest. AT&T/Alliance does not guarantee acceptance into a state program, state teacher certification or a teaching position to participants.

Q: When did the Transition to Teaching Program begin and who is eligible to participate?

A: The Program began January, 1993. Any occupational employee with at least five years of service, a baccalaureate degree, and who voluntarily leaves the payroll via one of the Company’s force management plans is eligible to participate. Employees may register for the Program while still on payroll but may not be reimbursed for certification expenses of courses while on payroll. This includes courses begun while on payroll but completed after leaving the Company.

Q: How much financial support will be offered by the Company?

A: The amount of financial support will vary by individual and by state, given prior education and experiences and the varying requirements and procedures of the states. The maximum financial assistance available to any individual is $2,500.

Q: How will Program participants be reimbursed for certification-related expenses?

A: Program participants should submit a Request for Reimbursement form along with receipts for expenses incurred to:

AT&T/ALLIANCE TRANSITION TO TEACHING PROGRAM
The Alliance
80 Cottontail Lane - Suite 320
Somerset, NJ 08873

Participants will receive reimbursement for expenses which quality under the Program.  Certification requirements listed state-by-state can be found on the Academic Employment Network web site:  www.uky.edu/Education/TEP/usacert.html.

Q: Are the payments made to the Program participant’s taxable?

A: Amounts reimbursed to Program participants will be recorded and are currently

considered taxable income to Program participants.  AT&T/Alliance will treat participants

as “1099” vendors and will provide them with annual 1099 statements.  (AT&T/Alliance will

not withhold any taxes for participants, as they are no longer Company employees.)

Q: What kind of courses and expenses will be reimbursable under this program?

A: Alternate-route or other post-baccalaureate teacher certification programs vary a great

deal from state to state as do prior educational backgrounds of potential program

participants.  In general, reimbursable expenses will be for test fees, certification courses,

tuition, program application fees, textbooks, and mentorship expenses.  Since a

baccalaureate degree is a prerequisite for any alternate-route or other post-baccalaureate

program, courses taken toward a baccalaureate degree are not reimbursable as part of the

Program.

Q: In which states do alternate-route teacher certification programs exist?

A: Currently, the following states have alternate-route programs, although each has its

individual set of requirements and procedures to be followed.  A number of other states are

currently considering the introduction of such programs.

Alabama Kentucky North Carolina
Arizona Louisiana North Dakota
California Maine Ohio
Colorado Maryland Oklahoma
Connecticut Massachusetts Oregon
Delaware Minnesota Pennsylvania
District of Columbia Mississippi Rhode Island
Florida Missouri South Carolina
Georgia Montana Tennessee
Hawaii Nebraska Vermont
Idaho Nevada Virginia
Illinois New Hampshire Washington
Indiana New Jersey West Virginia
Iowa New Mexico Wisconsin
Kansas New York Wyoming

Q: What if a state does not have an alternate-route program or an individual prefers another certification process?

A: Other post-baccalaureate certification expenses are allowed and will be reimbursed under the terms and conditions of the Transition to Teaching Program Description.

It is the participant’s responsibility to research and enroll in the program offered in the state of choice. Certification requirements can be found, listed state-by-state, on the Academic Employment Network web site: http://www.academploy.com/certif.cfm and the University of Kentucky Certification Requirements web site: www.uky.edu/Education/TEP/usacert.html.
