Transition To Teaching (TTT)

INTRODUCTION

AT&T offers a TRANSITION TO TEACHING PROGRAM to provide financial assistance to those employees who make a career change into the teaching profession. For employees who leave the Company (see TTT Program Terms and Conditions), desire to go into teaching, and meet other requirements, AT&T will reimburse expenses incurred in participating in alternate-route or other post-baccalaureate teacher certification programs. These expenses generally include application fees, testing fees, education course fees, mentorship-apprenticeship fees and other such expenses.

BACKGROUND ON ALTERNATE-ROUTE TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS

Alternate-route teacher certification programs have been developed in a number of states in an attempt to improve the quality of the education. The aim of the alternate-route programs is to provide relevant and focused course work, guidance and support to prepare professionals currently in other fields for the realities of classroom teaching.

Alternate-route teacher certification programs currently exist in approximately 30 states and are being considered or planned in a number of others. While many of the programs have similar titles, each is unique in terms of specific prerequisites and application procedures and training required to obtain alternate-route certification.

In general, alternate-route teacher certification programs:
  • Have state-specific requirements and are not intended as “emergency certification”

  • Require fewer education courses for certification or provide alternatives to college class work for meeting specific competencies

  • Require a bachelor’s degree as a prerequisite and require passing an examination of both basic skills and subject matter expertise

  • Are aimed specifically at identified shortage areas, either by subject matter or geographic area

  • Require student contact hours and a demonstration of competency in teaching

  • Include some sort of “mentorship”, one-on-one support, guidance and assistance from a experienced teacher

  • Have a variety of delivery channels for the different elements of the certification programs, including individual school districts, private and public colleges/universities, state education service centers or some combination of the above

  • Have different requirements for primary vs. secondary teaching
